Project Background

In 2019 and 2021, Hume City Council undertook consultation on Derby Street Reserve to seek community ideas on what is needed in the Reserve.

Respondents in 2019 said they would like to see more exercise equipment, improvement of the picnic area, replacement of the tennis court with new tennis courts and a full-size basketball court. A dog park and more lighting emerged as recurring themes from the analysis as well.

A concept plan was then developed and in 2021 was published for community consultation. The concept plan was received well by respondents, with respondents liking the play space, exercise equipment and public toilets the most.

Improvements to Debry Street Reserve are now underway to provide new facilities and recreational spaces for all ages and abilities in a safe and inclusive environment.

Works will be carried out in three stages.

Stage One will include the upgrade of the existing tennis courts to include:

• A multipurpose basketball, netball and futsal court
• Two recreational tennis courts
• Sheltered viewing area with bench seating
• New footpath connecting to Derby Street
• New public toilets

Stage Two will include a new purpose-built play and recreation environment which will include:

• Junior and senior play areas
• Nature play area
• New outdoor exercise equipment
• Covered picnic area with new BBQ and
• drinking fountain
• New hit-up wall
• Informal recreational lawn areas
• Landscaped garden
• Tree planting
• Connecting path network
• Perimeter fencing
• New carpark with lighting

Stage Three / Future Stage

Community engagement will take place to address the future development of the BMX Track and other opportunities for this space.
