Background

Council wants to hear from the community about a draft design to improve the land Council owns outside the shops on the corner of Macedon Street and Jackson St Macedon Street in Sunbury.

Macedon Street shops are an important local space which connects with nearby homes and community spaces such as the Sunbury Global Learning Centre. The street has a range of local cafes and food shops. People in the community use it often.

Earlier in 2026, Council spoke with local traders, business owners, and landowners to learn how the area is used and what could be improved. Their feedback helped shape the draft design, which focuses on making the area safer, easier to get around, and more welcoming.

This project is part of Hume’s Places Program, which supports improvements to local shopping strips across Hume. You can also find information about this project on the Projects and Works page.

Beryl Ryswyk says:

Please provide a wide enough pedestrian pathway for mobility scooters to pass through while passing a baby pram.

22 June, 2026

T Mcleod says:

Pedestrian visibility crossing Jackson st is really poor, particularly with parked cars. Not fixing this issue is not ‘safer’

22 June, 2026

John Doe says:

No dedicated bike/footpath to act as an extension of the bike lane from Bulla. Huge oversight, not “safer” or “easier to get around.”

22 June, 2026

Kstyles says:

Lighting on trees like O'Shannassy street. NO cheap grading cement concrete. Create a walking area that can represent the country feel.

21 June, 2026

James says:

Keep existing trees that’s important for it feeling developed and charmed and adding more trees for environment. Keep old bricks or relay.

21 June, 2026

Louise says:

Kerp the bricks, it does add character. Different native plants would be nice. Signage showing where the shops are when coming into Sunbury.

21 June, 2026

Judith says:

The idea of plants that do not grow too high.

20 June, 2026

Beryl Ryswyk says:

Push bottom push traffic lights are badly needed for pedestrians safety crossing Macedon Street.

20 June, 2026

Kate says:

Keeps existing trees ✅ Footpath upgrade ✅ Permanent seating & verandah upgrade (?) if consistent will make space feel more inviting

19 June, 2026

Lachie says:

Keep the brick foot path, I think the design looks great. At least re-lay the bricks if you wanted to re-do the foot path. It shows heritage

18 June, 2026

Cheryl says:

What a waste of money! Please spend it on fixing the pot holes and making the existing round abouts look nice again.

18 June, 2026

Jill says:

I would like to see more outdoor All Weather seating

Hisham says:

I would put pedestrian lights at Jackson Street. Only one pedestrian crossing near Evan’s Street is not sufficient anymore.

22 June, 2026

Kstyles says:

Add native trees. Not generic plants. Hopefully you have professionals who have a good idea on suitable country vibe trees

21 June, 2026

James says:

I would add more trees though out of the same exact kind that’s already there and leave the existing developed trees

18 June, 2026

Cheryl says:

Stop wasting money! Why did you strip all the plants out of the roundabouts, it’s so ugly now with just grey mounds of stone.

16 June, 2026

Jerry says:

I would not change anything. It is fine as it is. Money can be better spent elsewhere.

15 June, 2026

Lari Keel says:

More shaded seating and the area needs more parking, with highlighted dedicated short term parking for take away shops

15 June, 2026

Mary says:

Focus on area looking clean/safe. Seating is good. Outdoor dining only practical for limited months. May need a controlled pedestrian?

15 June, 2026

Mary says:

I know there needs to be a disabled parking outside the hotel but if that happens there will be less parking for parents & crossing supervis

15 June, 2026

Jenna Dalton says:

No barrier between seating area and road, unsafe to sit and have coffee with my toddler next to such a busy road after our library visit

14 June, 2026

Laura says:

An opportunity to created WSUD garden beds or have permeable pavement as minimum to passively irrigate gardens?

14 June, 2026

Laura says:

Crepe Myrtle’s are a small tree and don’t add much value to reaching canopy cover targets. Different species with more canopy.

14 June, 2026

Laura says:

Improvement of safety for pedestrians- cnr Jackson/Macedon. Really dangerous for school kids and hotel patrons with cars not following signs
