What is the Masterplan hoping to do?

Merlynston Creek will be healthier with improved habitat and some concrete areas replaced with rocks and greenery. Shady walking loops will be created for people to enjoy, along with new picnic, event, sport and play areas.

The Masterplan aims to:

  • to naturalise and celebrate Merlynston Creek and its cultural values
  • to create different recreation types and spaces for people to enjoy
  • to create one continuous walking and cycling trail from Barry Road to the Western Ring Road.

Merlynston Creek will be healthier as some concrete areas replaced with rocks and greenery. The parks will have more shade and vegetation. Shorter shady walking loops will be available so that community can choose to travel the whole length of the Parkland or travel along their favourite routes.

Look at our hotspot map below to see examples of what is planned in the parklands.

How did we get here?

Merlynston Creek is the main green open space for people living in Dallas and Broadmeadows. It connects parks including Laura Douglas Reserve, Hepburn Street Reserve (Dallas Tennis Hall), Seabrook Reserve, Will Will Rook Cemetery, and Jack Roper Reserve.

However, for the community to better enjoy all of the parklands, a range of improvements need to be made from Maffra Street to the Western Ring Road.

We heard a number of things from the community in July and August last year about what you would like to see. This, together with research Council has done about good outcomes have been included in the draft Merlynston Creek Parklands Masterplan.

Some of the actions are easier to do than others and many will take years to achieve. Some of them require working together with other organisations. The actions have been identified as:

  • Short term (1-5 years)
  • Medium term (6-10 years)
  • Long term (11-20 years)
  • Ongoing

The actions will fill in gaps along the walking trail, upgrade landscaping, provide play and picnic areas and will make the creek more accessible to community and encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors in different ways.

Merlynston Creek Parklands are located on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country and cultural connections will be supported.

Kroz says:

There should be a link to the factory area alot of people working there said they would walk the path rather then the 5km drive around.
