Background
The family of Mary Wicks OAM have contacted Council about naming a park in Sunbury in honour of their late mother.
From the late 1950s until her passing, Mary Wicks OAM was a volunteer, member, office bearer and fundraiser for many organisations and groups.
She was formally recognised by the:
- Kiwanis Club of Sunbury as Citizen of the Year for outstanding Community Service (2011)
- Sunbury International Women’s Day Steering Committee through the Chocolate Lily award (2011)
- Australian Red Cross for Outstanding Service (2015)
- Historical and Heritage society in Sunbury with the Kathleen Aitken Outstanding Citizen Award (2019)
In 2019 this culminated with Mary Wicks being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to the Sunbury community.
Why is Council asking for feedback?
The park bounded by Harker Street does not have an official name and the application establishes a strong link to place as Mary Wicks OAM lived in Harker Street for over 50 years. The application also meets a number of the naming principles.
To comply with the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria and Hume City Council’s Place Names Policy, Council is required to invite local residents to have their say on this naming proposal.
