Background

In early 2023 community and community organisations had the opportunity to suggest names for a reserve, which is unofficially known as The Village Green Reserve (bound by Rupertswood Road, Berrydale Road, Rolling Meadows Drive and The Village Green in Sunbury).

To avoid any confusion with the officially named Sunbury Village Green, Council asked community members and organisations to suggest a new name for the reserve. There are many reasons for having an official name that is easy to differentiate it from the Sunbury Village Green is ensuring public safety by ensuring names do not cause confusion for operators (e.g. emergency services, mail services).

What we heard

Council received 49 suggestions for names. We had 22 suggestions using the words ‘Rolling’, ‘Meadows’ and/or ‘Green’ in different combinations (e.g. Rolling Meadows Reserve, Green Meadow Reserve, Rolling Meadows Green). These combinations of words are not compliant under Naming Rules because they use an estate name, which is prohibited under Principle J Using Commercial and Business Names.

There were also naming suggestions containing the word ‘Village’. These could not be considered as a name containing this word could cause continued confusion with the existing Sunbury Village Green.
