Background
Hume City Council was the first Council in Australia to create a Social Justice Charter in 2001, and also the first to create a Citizens Bill of Rights in 2004. The Charter has been updated several times since then, evolving along with local community needs.
As we celebrate 25 years of social justice in Hume, a new draft of the Charter has been prepared.
The draft Charter has been developed through key stakeholder consultation and the community is now invited to share their feedback.
The purpose of the Social Justice Charter is to guide Council services to ensure that human rights are respected and protected, committing to advancing a fair and just society
The revised draft Charter:
- Strengthens the information about the Victorian Human Rights and Responsibilities Act (2006) and the role it plays in Council
- Updates the Guiding Principles
- Updates priority cohorts and social justice issues and barriers relevant to the Hume community
- Strengthens our approach to monitoring and evaluation.
